United Human Network is where I currently share one Daily Life Lesson, which allows me to keep track of myself and keep perspective of my life and the world around me.
The story of UHN…
It was November 17th, 2012 when I got the idea to create an App for myself that would help remind me to share. I got this idea while on the N train to Angelhack, which was a Hackathon happening in the New York City. For those of you who may know what a Hackathon is:
A Hackathon is an intense 24hour period where you work on an idea/product/business and demo it for prizes and ultimately fun.
After I decided this would be what I wanted to build at this Hackathon I started to think about what I'd call this App. I went through quite a few names within an hour and ultimately landed on United Human Network - UHN, which just felt right. The next challenge as many of you may know with starting something online is crossing your fingers that the domain name is available. Unfortunately and fortunately the dot com was taken, but then I saw that the dot net wasn't and it totally made sense that the domain name would be a dot net since the name was "United Human 'Net'work". I was clearly on a role here. Although I started to think that perhaps I didn't want to build this at the Hackathon because there are certain rules that come with building/submitting things at these events and I didn't want to have to deal with that. So I decided to do some basic design mockups of what the App could look like and my main goal was to create the logo. I'm happy to say that I was able to create version 1 of the logo, which was great for a short few hours of work. Now I didn't spend all the Hackathon doing this I actually worked on another product (the other product) with some friends, which actually won a prize.
The following week I decided I wanted to do a little more design work on the App. And then it hit me! I realized that this could be so much more than just this simple tool for myself. And so for the next few days I started to think about what it could be and how I'd do it. What I ended up realizing was that I had already been doing a few projects that I thought could be a good fit to be housed under this United Human Network - UNN umbrella. I also realized that I had a few other ideas stored away that I had recently come up with that could also be a part of this and the real key to all of these things was that they all intertwined in some way. So by me working on one thing it was also feeding in to something else. Holy Shi… this was mind blowing for me because I've always struggled with how to work on projects when they're totally different. It takes a lot of brain power to switch from one project to another or at least it does for me, but this method of working on projects that somehow connect was ingenious for me.
And so the next step for me was to figure out what order I wanted to work on these projects. I realized I had a little bit of a following for this project I had started several months earlier that was strictly on Twitter. I had started to document one daily life lesson I learned every single day. And to make sure I owned up to these things I decided to share this on Twitter and use that as my personal database. It turns out quite a few of my friends/followers really appreciated me sharing these things even though they could be a bit vague at times. For me this has really helped me see a lot of patterns in my life and allowed me to make huge shifts in the way I react to things. I know I have a lifetime of work to do regarding this, but this has definitely made this process much more enjoyable and FUN for me. And so I decided that this would be what I started with and I would put the App on hold primarily because I don't do iPhone development so I couldn't actually build it myself.
My next step was to create a website for United Human Network - UHN and implement Yesterday's Life Lesson's in to it so that there was at least one project going while I worked on the next. Getting all of these things all figured out, designed and coded took me a few short months and once that was done I went back to flushing out more designs for the original App. And this is where we are today. on version 3 of the website.
And like I said I have a few projects to keep me busy for quite a few months. The beauty of the UHN is that there's an infinite number of things I can work on for it.
So that's pretty much the story as of now. And I will keep at it because I know it's something that I NEED to do. And for those of you who wish to become better humans I wish you guys the best on your journey.
